Sparseness, improvisations and everyday objects as sources of inspiration

The massive consumption of goods and resources is a global problem of our time. Over-functional and extraordinary products are increasingly being produced. At the same time, the industry forces us to continuously buy these products through advertising campaigns and planned obsolescence. This inevitably leads to social and environmental tensions.

With my bachelor thesis, I aim to raise awareness for excess consumption. An analysis of handmade, everyday objects from the past from South Tyrolean agriculture is intended to awaken this awareness.

The farmers of the remote farms in Val Venosta used to struggle a lot with severe poverty. To cultivating the dry land and to providing the numerous children with enough food forced the farmers again and again to make objects spontaneously and with primitive means, which were strictly functional. In this way, what already existed was often repaired or adapted to the needs of the farmers. This testifies to an impressive appreciation of resources and objects. In our present consumer and throw-away society, where repairs are rendered obsolete by the rapid replacement of products, the overwhelming majority of the population does not appreciate their objects.

The way farmers work, their ambition to repair, the »honest« objects and their economical use of resources inspire me. Based on the analysis of historical agricultural commodities, I developed the idea to design a shopping trolley for my final thesis.
