Reseachers expect that by 2030 Avocado will be the most sold exotic fruit. The biggest problem with the increasing success of avocados is the huge waste of water that is made in the intensive productions.

The aim of our project is to reduce the environmental impact by exploting all of its potential. We propose to stop throwing away the seeds and start reusing them in a smart way.

We collect avocados’ seeds by installing a few intellingents bins in big cities. The seeds are cleaned and then collected in a basket. The basket can be removed and emptied once its full. Afterwards they are brought to BIOFASE, a company that creates a bioplastic that is composed by 60% of avocados’ seeds. This bioplastic decomposes completely in only 200 days and it’s mostly used for one-use food items.

The project is linked to an app that shows the users where is the bin closest to them and it also explains the project fully. People can find the download page of the app through a QR code. It is placed on the bins and on the avocados themselves! Indeed, thanks to a collaboration with Sicilia Avocado (sustainable production of avocados), the QR is engraved with laser on the peel.

We believe in this project because it allows to transform waste in a new sustainable material.
