The Battle of Self-Image
BA Art Warm-Up – Foundation Course
2023
semester
This two-piece art work consists of a poem and a visualization in form of a collage. I was inspired by the subjective meaning of the word IMAGE. Meaning not the image as in a picture perhaps but the Image of a person within a collective. In other words, how a person is physically viewed and psychologically received. With that I wanted to emphasize the problems that come with people’s image. Talking about image for me is talking about the exchange with who we really are, the image we give away and how others react to that. This undeniable human interaction can also lead to problems. This point leads me to include matters such as racism and general discrimination into my thought process. With being who you are, expression yourself, your thoughts, and feelings, which leads to building up an image around yourself. Some people do not respect this genuine and harmless image. Certain people do not accept or tolerate this image, because of reasons I do not need to explain further. It was an artistic choice to portray racism in my collage, as I find it beautiful to cross the line between two skin colors. Hopefully opening a discussion, which leads the world to be a better place.
