Model making – Family matters
BA Design Warm-Up – Foundation Course
2023
semester
The third assignment introduced us to a new material: paperboard. We soon discovered that every material comes with its own challenges and potentials, and discovering them can be very fun and interesting. The first part of the assignment was to reproduce an object of choice: after reproducing at least two silhouettes of it (front and side view) and making them fit together perpendicularly, we already have an accurate idea of the size and main features of the object. We then had to come up with different variations of it, simply by modifying and exaggerating its main features, and a final, 360° accurate model of one of such variations.
We then had to make an extra model of the same object we had chosen for the “Family matters” assignment, this time with thicker, black paperboard. After creating the various sections of the object in Rhino, a 3D CAD software, we would then send the file to a laser to cut each piece precisely.
