The use of lime in furniture

Lime is the typical binder of historical buildings, a basic and indispensable material for masonry, plaster and stucco. Its role is therefore fundamental for the stability of buildings, since the walls can be built with bricks or stones can be built. In addition, lime also serves as a support for elaborate decorations and, thanks to its moisture regulation, as a protection against mold growth. Especially in the Alpine region, due to the climatic conditions and high humidity, the use of lime was of great importance. Therefore, liming the farms was a very common traditional method in South Tyrol to obtain an antibacterial, air-permeable and water-repellent finishing plaster. The lime was / is also used in agriculture for the treatment of plants and soils.

Due to my Albanian roots as well as personal interest, I am dealing with the concept of using lime in architecture and agriculture in Albania and South Tyrol, both of which are my home. The aim of the project is to connect two different cultures and countries, showing functional as well as aesthetic possibilities of a primitive, historically marked material. The diversity of lime offers room for new interpretations and can be and can go beyond architectural and agricultural norms.
