Made Up – Interventions on traditional South Tyrolean garments

The project, titled Made Up, delves into an exploration of gender roles in South Tyrol, using traditional garments known as Trachten as a medium. Within this context, Trachten serveas a metaphor for a cultural attitude that resists change, rooted in the belief that things have always been a certain way. In the broader cultural context, Tracht is viewed as an unchangeable aspect of South Tyrolean culture, symbolizing cultural traditions and immutability. Additionally, the traditional garments encompass a complex web of ideologies and meanings that can be linked to South Tyrolean societal roles.

The primary objective of the project was to disrupt the unalterable nature of this attire, prompting contemplation about what is considered unquestionable. The work examines various details of the garments, creating narratives that offer an alternative perspective through a sculptural approach. By employing diverse techniques and materials, the traditional attire and the cultural narrative it represents are challenged.

These interventions are made on the Meraner Dirndl, a Trachttypical of the Merano region. By exploring the significance of its specific elements and details, each component is selectively translated into a new narrative. The alterations are designed to be visually subtle and elegant at first glance but become intriguing and thought-provoking upon closer examination.

Das Projekt Made Up untersucht die Geschlechterrollen in Südtirol und nutzt traditionelle Trachten als Medium. Dabeidienen die Trachten als Metapher für eine kulturelle Haltung, die Veränderungen ablehnt und den Glauben hegt, dass Dingeschon immer so waren, wie sie sind. Die Veränderungensind so konzipiert, dass sie auf den ersten Blick subtil und elegant wirken, aber bei genauerer Betrachtung zumNachdenken anregen.

Il progetto Made Up affronta la questione dei ruoli di genere in Alto Adige e utilizza gli abiti tradizionali noti come Trachtcome mezzo di comunicazione. In questo contesto, gli abiti tradizionali fungono da metafora di un approccio culturale chesi oppone al cambiamento ed è radicata nella convinzione che le cose siano sempre state così come sono. Nel contesto culturale più ampio, la Tracht è visto come un aspetto immutabile della cultura altoatesina, simbolo di tradizioni culturali e immutabilità. Inoltre, l’abito tradizionale comprende una complessa rete di ideologie e significati che possono essere collegati ai ruoli sociali in Alto Adige.

L’obiettivo del progetto era principalmente quello di rompere l’immutabilità di questi abiti e incoraggiare la riflessione su ciò che è considerato indiscutibile. Il lavoro esamina vari dettagli degli abiti e crea narrazioni che offrono una prospettiva alternativa attraverso un approccio scultoreo. Attraverso l’uso di diverse tecniche e materiali, l’abbigliamento tradizionale e la narrazione culturale che rappresenta vengono messi in discussione.

Gli interventi sono realizzati sul Dirndl meranese, un abito tradizionale tipico della zona di Merano. Esplorando il significato di elementi e dettagli specifici, ogni componente viene tradotto selettivamente in una nuova narrazione. I cambiamenti sono pensati per apparire sottili ed eleganti a prima vista, ma emozionanti e stimolanti quando osservati più attentamente.
