61% of all food waste comes from our homes. So when we take steps towards reducing our own personal food waste footprint, it can have an enormously positive impact on the

environment. But in order to waste less we first need to change our attitudes towards food, which means cultivating an awareness of, and an appreciation for, what we eat.
In other words, we have to start looking at our food, smelling it, considering it, tasting it, and really thinking about how we can use it. We have to learn how to handle and prepare our food  in a way that prevents us from wasting it — and teaching these principles to children is the best way to ensure that the food waste problem doesn’t continue expanding into the future.

The project “Pips and Peels” is an illustrated cookbook for children and adults that offers recipes designed to utilise the foods that are most commonly wasted. It contains four main chapters, each of which aims to cover one or more topics related to reducing food waste – from mindful eating and gratitude practices to recipes specifically designed to be cooked with leftovers. The recipes themselves don’t offer clear measurements or instructions, leaving room for improvisation and experimentation. Instructions on how to replant supermarket produce, grow food from seeds, and build compost bins are also included in order to allow the book to progress in a cyclical nature, whilst giving readers the opportunity
to engage with every step of their food’s
lifecycle.

Pips and Peels is a book that aims to encourage people to interact with their food and, in the process, become more confident and creative in how they reduce their food waste.
