Public Safety
BA Major Design – Graduation Project
2023.2
The thesis addresses the subject of fear and safety in public settings, with a focus on the university, and the consequent building of an app that aims contribute to everyone’s safety. Fear and safety are two intertwined subjects that are extremely difficult and necessitate a multi-layered approach.
The goal of the thesis is to begin at this point in order to better understand these difficulties and to develop an app that contributes to support people through collective, collaborative techniques. For this aim, I will first examine what safety is, how it is defined differently in different perspectives, and what disparities exist between gender and safety. In addition, statistical data, other methodologies such as a Cultural Probe, and market research on safety apps will be used to better understand people’s situations.
Following that, an app will be designed that aims contribute to improve the experience of safety in public settings as well as in the academic community. This software allows people who have similar issues and anxieties to communicate them, bring them together, and discover common solutions to problems or raise awareness about them. Furthermore, the app allows you to organise yourself with other members of the university community who are travelling around the city, so you may travel together and feel safer as a group rather than alone.
