STOP BEING POOR

Die Arbeit „STOP BEING POOR“ befasst sich mit den Lebensrealitäten von finanziell benachteiligten Studierenden. Sie stellt die Fragen: Wie fühlt es sich an arm zu sein? Was bedeutet es, das Studium selbst zu finanzieren? Und beantwortet diese in Form einer performativen Soundinstallation in der 6 Interviews zu hören sind. Sie versucht dabei, Gefühle, Erfahrungen und Erlebnisse von einzelnen Studierenden für Außenstehende greifbar zu machen, indem sie in eine Situation versetzt werden, die sie kurzzeitig selbst mit der Problematik konfrontiert. Zur Realisierung dieses Konzepts bedient sie sich dem Format der BAföG-Anträge, welches adaptiert und als zu überwindende Hürde zwischen das Publikum und die Interviews gestellt wird. Das Ausfüllen dieser Formulare soll die Voraussetzung sein, um die Interviews anhören zu können. Trotz der privilegierten Lage Deutschlands, bestehen im Bildungssystem weiterhin strukturelle Benachteiligungen, die vorhandene Ungleichheiten verstärken. „STOP BEING POOR“ ist ein Versuch diese Begebenheit nachvollziehbar zu machen und in den gesellschaftlichen Fokus zu rücken.

The work “STOP BEING POOR” deals with the realities of life for financially disadvantaged students. It asks the questions: How does it feel to be poor? What does it mean to finance your studies yourself? And answers them in the form of a performative sound installation in which 6 interviews can be heard. In doing so, it tries to make the feelings and experiences of individual students tangible for outsiders by putting them in a situation that briefly confronts them with the problem themselves. To realize this concept, the work uses the format of BAföG applications, which is adapted and placed between the audience and the interviews as a hurdle to be overcome. Filling out these forms is supposed to be the prerequisite for being able to listen to the interviews. Despite Germany’s privileged position, there are still structural disadvantages in the education system that reinforce existing inequalities. “STOP BEING POOR” is an attempt to make this situation comprehensible and to bring it into the social focus.
