Ypsilon, a biodegradable sports bra designed around the user

Ypsilon is a human-centered design project consisting of the development of a sustainable sports bra.
Most sports bras sold as sustainable are made with recycled synthetic fibers or recycled plastic. At the
end of their life, these products end up in landfills and their petroleum-based materials take up to 200
years to decompose. Furthermore, at each washing microfibers are released into the water and these
infinitesimally small particles cannot be removed, so they accumulate in waterways and seas polluting
them and threatening their fauna’s survival. This project aims to find a solution to this problem. The final
product is in fact created with biodegradable materials, and by taking sustainability into consideration
during every step of the product’s life cycle. By collaborating with Italian companies that are committed to
reducing their impact on the environment, it was possible to imagine a production line that greatly reduces
CO2 emission, water waste, and microfibers pollution.
Furthermore, by involving potential users during the whole process, the product was able to be improved
each time, solve their problems, and follow their desires. Ypsilon is a light and comfortable medium support
sports bra, its shape, and choice of the fabrics take into consideration the areas that need more
breathability to offer great moisture management and avoid irritation.
Thanks to the cooperation with experts and athletes it was possible to obtain a performing sustainable
sports bra, in fact, 90% of the product will disappear within 5 years after it is disposed of.

Ypsilon ist ein Human-Centered-Designprojekt, das in der Entwicklung eines nachhaltigen Sport-BHs
besteht. Die meisten Sport-BHs, die als nachhaltig verkauft werden, sind aus recycelten Kunstfasern oder
recyceltem Kunststoff hergestellt. Am Ende ihrer Lebensdauer landen diese Produkte auf Mülldeponien,
und ihre auf Erdöl basierenden Materialien brauchen bis zu 200 Jahre, um sich zu zersetzen. Darüber
hinaus werden bei jedem Waschvorgang Mikrofasern ins Wasser abgegeben, die nicht entfernt werden
können, so dass sie sich in den Gewässern und Meeren ansammeln und diese verschmutzen und das
Überleben der Fauna gefährden. Dieses Projekt zielt darauf ab, eine Lösung für dieses Problem zu finden.
Das Endprodukt wird aus biologisch abbaubaren Materialien hergestellt, wobei in jeder Phase des
Lebenszyklus des Produkts auf Nachhaltigkeit geachtet wird. Durch die Zusammenarbeit mit italienischen
Unternehmen, die sich für die Verringerung ihrer Umweltauswirkungen einsetzen, konnte eine
Produktionslinie entwickelt werden, die den CO2-Ausstoß, die Wasserverschmutzung und die
Verschmutzung durch Mikrofasern erheblich reduziert.
Durch Einbeziehung der Nutzer in den Designprozess wurde das Produkt entsprechend den Wünschen
und Erwartungen gestaltet.
Ypsilon ist ein leichter und komfortabler Sport-BH mit mittlerem Halt. Seine Form und die Auswahl der
Stoffe berücksichtigen die Bereiche, die mehr Atmungsaktivität benötigen, um ein gutes
Feuchtigkeitsmanagement zu bieten und Reizungen zu vermeiden.
Dank der Zusammenarbeit mit Experten und Athleten war es möglich, einen leistungsfähigen und
nachhaltigen Sport-BH zu entwickeln. 90% des Produkts wird innerhalb von 5 Jahren nach seiner
Entsorgung verschwinden.

Ypsilon è un progetto di human centered design che consiste nello sviluppo di un reggiseno sportivo
sostenibile. La maggior parte dei reggiseni sportivi venduti come sostenibili sono realizzati con fibre
sintetiche riciclate o plastica riciclata. Alla fine della loro vita, questi prodotti finiscono nelle discariche e i
loro materiali a base di petrolio impiegano fino a 200 anni per decomporsi. Inoltre, ad ogni lavaggio i capi
rilasciano microfibre nell’acqua che non è possibile estrarre; quindi, si accumulano nei corsi d’acqua e
negli oceani, inquinandoli e minacciando la sopravvivenza della fauna. Questo progetto mira a trovare una
soluzione a questo problema. Il prodotto finale è realizzato con materiali biodegradabili e mettendo
attenzione alla sostenibilità in ogni fase del ciclo di vita del prodotto. Lavorando con aziende italiane
impegnate a ridurre il loro impatto ambientale, è stato possibile sviluppare una filiera di produzione che
riduce significativamente le emissioni di CO2, l’inquinamento delle acque e da microfibre.
Coinvolgendo i potenziali utenti durante l’intero processo, è stato possibile migliorare il prodotto ogni volta
per risolvere problemi reali e soddisfare le loro esigenze. Ypsilon è un reggiseno sportivo leggero e
confortevole con supporto medio. La sua forma e la selezione del tessuto tengono conto delle zone che
hanno bisogno di più traspirazione per offrire una buona gestione del sudore ed evitare irritazioni.
Grazie alla collaborazione con esperti e atleti, è stato possibile sviluppare un reggiseno sportivo
performante e sostenibile. Il 90% del prodotto scomparirà entro 5 anni dal suo smaltimento.
