Humans have used drinking tubes in various shapes for hundreds of years. However, the game-changing invention of the “bendy” straws was born in 1937, thanks to Joseph B. Friedman’s work. This design had a huge success: it was produced and sold in millions of copies. The first sale went to a hospital because the bending mechanism helped bed-ridden patients drink while lying down.
