“A Dialogue about Dimensions” is a video project which explores the relationship between humans and space through history, with a particular focus on the human consideration of the self. To connect the past of Gods and Myths to our scientific knowledge, I created a simple hand-drawn, black and white animation, where a malleable figure continuously interacts with the borders of the frame, which are the metaphor for the limits of the conception of the universe. During the travel inside of the frame, the shape resizes, as humans resize themselves during history. The viewer soon discovers that the animation is a loop, which opens questions about our presents and about the reality we are currently living.

The video also investigates the indexical meaning of some images, and by combining spoken language with visual material, I’ve tried to give different readings to photographic images. This presence on the animation represents a different approach to the theme: in fact, thanks to our culture, we can separate what is real from what is a symbol belonging to the past. The voice guides this constructed changing of meaning, which shifts from indexical to symbolic. This approach is relevant for the video because it highlights the tendency of believing in one fixed reality, and it breaks this limit by overlapping different meanings. Together with the looped animation, in fact, the whole video suggests that the reality is liquid, and our truth is as worth as the truth of the Myths.

In conclusion, this project aims to open questions about our current conception of ourselves and of the universe in which we live by creating a connection between past, present, and future. This video does not want to find answers to those questions; therefore, it opens a dialogue about our dimension with the viewer.
