Animal Design – Space Elytron

Space Elytron is a jetpack projected for individual flight. Its structure and its name originate from a study of the characteristics and potential of insects’ elytra. Elytra are structures that developed thanks to evolutionary modifications of a pair of wings and are found above all in beetles. Their main function consists in the protection of the wings right beneath them. Moreover, elytra are often colored with bright pigment in order to discourage potential predators or inform of the toxicity of the insect they belong to. Studies have also investigated the passive aerodynamic stabilization that elytra can bring to flying.

Space Elytron è un jetpack progettato per il volo individuale. La sua struttura e il suo nome hanno origine da uno studio delle caratteristiche e potenzialità delle elitre degli insetti. Le elitre sono strutture che si sono sviluppate grazie a mdifiche evolutive di un paio di ali e che si trovano soprattutto tra i coleotteri. La loro funzione principale è quella di proteggere le ali sottostanti. Le elitre sono spesso contraddistinte da pigmenti sgargianti che scoraggiano potenziali predatori o informano della tossicità dell’insetto a cui appartengono. Alcuni studi hanno investigato la stabilizzazione aerodinamica passiva che le elitre possono apportare al volo dell’insetto.
