Baleen whales, in german Bartwale (eng. Beard-whales), have a very characteristic way of weeding. It is so characteristic, that it they have been named after it. Baleen is the an important part of their mouth, with which these types of whales filter their food out of the seawater. The consistency and looks remind a lot of a comb or beard (which explains the German term, “bearded” whales). Inspired by this filter mechanism, and combined with the knowledge that human hair absorbs oil (*video link below), the idea for the “BALEEN – Oilspill Roomba” was born.
