Book – Undesirable Heritage
BA Visual Communication Project
“Undesirable Heritage” explores the tormented relationship between a controversial heritage and its territory, coming across a very delicate aspect of the apparently picture-perfect province of Bolzano, namely its divided identity. The narrative surrounding the Monument to Victory shows that heritage artifacts still play a key role in society since they are not only mediators of the past, but they also interact with the present and the future through the meanings and values attached to them by people. Through this book I would like to illustrate how a “culturalization” of memory can evoke feelings of belonging and at the same time be conceived as an arrogant provocation. It is addressed to all those who are interested in discovering more about the processes by which a monument is created, preserved, forgotten, destroyed or revived.
