The Dr. Martens boot was originally developed 1945 by the German doctor Klaus Märtens as a more comfortable alternative to the safety boots worn during the war. For his first prototypes he used rubber from old military uniforms. The shoes feature a soft sole as well as sturdy leather which made them popular among workers.
