The forerunner of the kendama, the Nichi-getsu Ball, was popular from early to mid-1900s but became displaced by other games. It began to lose its popularity and was sold more as a souvenir then a game. However the S-type Kendama by Hideo Shinma (founder of the Tokyo Kendama Club) made it internationaly popular as a competitiv skill toy.
