Directions to servants is a satirical and humorous essay by Jonathan Swift, written in the early 1730s. The seemingly “unfinished” book reveals how absurd the social system of Eighteenth century England was. It is divided into 16 chapters, filled with cynical advices to each of the servants and is written in the style of an everyday manual.
That is exactly what the starting point for the redesign of this Victorian book was and also what gave it its whole flair: an old notebook with texts from a typewriter, handwritten elements and headlines, imperfect stamps for a handmade look and pencil drawn illustrations of animals embodied as the servants.
On top of this, everything is printed on recycled paper and comes with a special packaging, to appeal to all the senses of the reader and to enhance his reading experience.

Directions to servants ist ein satirischer und humorvoller Essay von Jonathan Swift, der in den frühen 1730er Jahren geschrieben wurde. Das scheinbar “unvollendete” Buch zeigt, wie absurd das soziale System im England des achtzehnten Jahrhunderts war. Es ist in 16 Kapitel unterteilt, die alle mit zynischen Ratschlägen für jeden Diener gefüllt sind, und ist im Stil eines Alltagshandbuchs geschrieben.
Genau das war der Ausgangspunkt für die Neugestaltung dieses viktorianischen Buches und gab ihm auch sein ganzes Flair: ein altes Notizbuch mit Schreibmaschinentexten, handgeschriebenen Elementen und Überschriften, unperfekten Stempeln für ein handgemachtes Äußeres und mit Bleistift gezeichneten Illustrationen von Tieren, die die Dienerschaft verkörpern.
Darüber hinaus ist alles auf Recyclingpapier gedruckt und wird in einer besonderen Verpackung präsentiert, um alle Sinne des Lesers anzusprechen und sein Leseerlebnis zu vervollständigen.

Il libro, apparentemente “incompiuto”, mostra quanto fosse assurdo il sistema sociale nell’Inghilterra del XVIII secolo. È diviso in 16 capitoli, tutti pieni di consigli cinici per ogni servitore, ed è scritto nello stile di un manuale quotidiano.
Questo è stato esattamente il punto di partenza per la riprogettazione di questo libro vittoriano e gli ha dato anche tutto il suo flair: un vecchio quaderno con testi dattiloscritti, elementi e titoli scritti a mano, timbri imperfetti per un aspetto artigianale e illustrazioni disegnate a matita di animali che incarnano i servi.
Inoltre, tutto è stampato su carta riciclata e presentato in un imballaggio speciale per fare appello a tutti i sensi del lettore e completare la sua esperienza di lettura.
