I morti non prendono l’ascensore è una graphic novel che racconta la realtà percepita da una persona affetta da disturbo post-traumatico da stress o PTSD. La protagonista del racconto affronta un viaggio in treno per partecipare al funerale della propria nonna, e nel frattempo rivive flashback traumatici legati alle relazioni abusanti che ha vissuto, azionati da stimoli che possono sembrare banali, come uscire sul balcone della propria abitazione. I colori che vanno dal giallo tenue al blu profondo e gli elementi marini fantastici disseminati all’interno della narrazione aiutano il lettore a immergersi insieme alla protagonista nei ricordi più profondi poco alla volta, come in una piscina per bambini, prima le caviglie, poi le ginocchia, il busto e infine la testa. Il tratto è molto semplice, per contrastare la complessità della materia narrata.Oltre al racconto autobiografico, la graphic novel vuole anche parlare di una prospettiva diversa del disturbo post-traumatico da stress, di solito associato all’ambito militare, mostrando come ogni esperienza negativa possa essere vissuta come trauma da una persona direttamente o indirettamente coinvolta.

Dead People Don’t Take the Elevator is a graphic novel about the perceived reality of a person suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. The protagonist of the story faces a train ride to attend her own grandmother’s funeral, and in the process relives traumatic flashbacks related to the abusive relationships she experienced, triggered by stimuli that may seem trivial, such as going out onto the balcony of her home. The colors ranging from soft yellow to deep blue and the fantastical sea elements scattered within the narrative help the reader plunge with the protagonist into deeper memories bit by bit, like in a kiddie pool, first her ankles, then her knees, her torso, and finally her head. The stroke is very simple, to contrast the complexity of the narrated subject matter. In addition to the autobiographical narrative, the graphic novel also wants to talk about a different perspective of post-traumatic stress disorder, usually associated with the military, showing how any negative experience can be experienced as trauma by a person directly or indirectly involved.
