It is a society obsessed with images and seeing. Since seeing also means controlling, it is intolerable for our cultural sensibility that something is cut off from the visual range, from the possibility of identifying it, obscured to the eyes.
One wants to be able to see, to break through the barrier represented by the veil.
Even more if what is deprived of sight is the woman, a category on which we have always wanted to advance aims of materialistic domination.
