Model Making – A tubular chair
BA Design Warm-Up – Foundation Course
2022
semester
Materials: plastic tubes for the frame and cardboard for the seat and armrests.
In this model making exercise, the task was divided into three different phases: the first involved making a chair equal to an existing one – of our choice – reproducing it as faithfully as possible. The challenge? Figuring out what the right measurements were and creating something proportionate. Only later, during the second phase, we could start to make changes to the chair, allowing us to lengthen or shorten the legs, the seat, the armrests… in short, it was necessary to reinvent it and adapt it to the possible needs of people. Lastly, as the third and final phase, we were asked to make the changes we preferred to the chair to make it our own. It was certainly interesting to work with a new material, to understand how it worked, what its characteristics were and to discover it little by little as we worked.
