Pappappero – crocheting paper yarn
MA Practice Based Course
2023
semester
This project focuses on repurposing take-away paper bags through the creation of recycled paper yarn.
Plain paper is insufficient for protecting food products because of poor barrier properties, low heat sealability and strength. So, it is impregnated with some additive or laminated with aluminium or plastic to improve its functional properties. These additives may interfere during the recycling process of the waste paper.
Collecting packages and use them as source material for textile products represent an alternative way of recycling paper, while also exploiting of the increased strength of this particular type of paper.
Crocheting turned out to be an excellent way of working with this material.
