Photographic Project – 2020, Interrupted

Pandemic stories: different activities, different thoughts, same place, same framing. My project is embedded in the field of tension between artistic photography and storytelling. What you see here is a selection of frames extrapolated from clips taken by videochat during the 2020 quarantine to show the ordinariness of this kind of life and these young women’s managed the Covid-19 Pandemic from April to June 2020.
Checking the new solutions that several photographers and video makers have devised during this period to continue with their work – not being able to take advantage of photographic studios or flesh and blood talents – and considering then the most effective way to talk and see people far away – the videochat -, I thought to use this way as an essential part of my project, to present also at the level of choice of material the difficulties of quarantine. So I did not use my photo camera, but the internal camera of the mobiles of the people who kindly helped me.
I thought to link the photos to a certain simplicity and naturalness, without excessively constructing the appearance and positions of the subjects as much as focusing instead on the framing. The method I experimented with was based on the use of a computer to stay in contact with me – I controlled the shot and gave the models some clues for movements – and a mobile phone, usually balanced between some books, which took short videos from which I would later extract the frames for my project.
