The project “Roots”, which consists of a promotional video of a private language school, is based on the concepts of language, culture, identity and the relationship between them.

Languages, as well as being part of our own culture, are indispensable to build our own identity, express and know ourselves and others and identify ourselves in a specific group or society. For this reason, it is important to keep idioms and dialects alive, especially now that languages are dying more and more. As a language disappears, culture and identities are lost, as every one of them has a different and unique way of looking at the world.

Many experts argue that in the future there will be only three or four languages spoken in the world, including English. Therefore, I wanted to imagine a future scenario in which Italian, like many other languages, will no longer exist, but will be replaced by English, as the only remaining language of communication.

In the video, the importance of a language is also represented through a misunderstanding of meanings. A translation of a group of words is not always the translation of the true meaning.

Losing a language means also losing one’s own cultural roots, essentials to know one’s identity and culture in depth. When we lose a language, we lose a connection with the past, the possibility of knowing where we come from and our own sense of identity and belonging.
