BA Visual Communication Project
2023
semester
This work was inspired by an artistic movement called „core core“ that emerged on social media platforms like tumblr and TikTok and is mainly created and consumed by gen z. It usually manifests in montages of short videos that seem to be stitched together randomly.
The videos often feature contents of all kinds, fashion hauls might be interrupted by footage of protests, the next one could be an everyday life scene or a politician’s speech on pollution. This method of combining and juxtapositioning creates an interconnection between the single videos and subtly puts them in a context. While the impression of arbitrariness lasts, the videos often evoke associations with topics like the absurdities of postcapitalism and may leave the viewer feeling overwhelmed and melancholic.
The so-called „core core“ videos essentially express a collective experience of humans living in the age of overexposition to all sorts of content due to unlimited access to digital media.
This work is an attempt to translate this contemporary artistic movement to printed matter, by observing, then applying its methods, like the creation of context through combination and the impression of arbitrariness. All photos are part of my private phone gallery from the last 6 years, a personal collection every member of our present post-digital society has.
