Losing Home, Not Dignity: Designing in the context of migrants integration
BA Major Design – Graduation Project
2023.1
The migrations that have touched Europe and the United States in recent decades are one of the effects of the imbalances between countries in human development, and with the increasing political and climatic extreme phenomena around the world, Europe is becoming a destination for many individuals who want to improve their social condition. This phenomenon is countered by the xenophobic tendencies of the countries of the union, which, driven by populist governments, criminalise migrants, impeding their reception, which is their fundamental right.
The effect of these policies is the forcing of the migrant into a legal rights limbo in which he loses all dignity, unable to rebuild his life. This is often accompanied by the hostility of public opinion. The migrant should be guaranteed equal opportunities through projects that stimulate inclusion and exchange. Fortunately, the volunteer network of many urban communities manages to fill the empty spaces left by the institutions.
With this project I intend to seek an answer to these problems through social design and interaction in urban space, the first true place of interaction between the migrant community and the city. Through a mapping of the reception fabric of the city of Bolzano, a small element of street furniture was developed, which, through its visual qualities and its insertion in the city fabric, acts as an identifying element for the migrant and as a catalyst for his or her integration in Europe. The practices the structure focuses on are service orientation, economic welfare creation and cultural exchange. However, its basic elements make it adaptable and open to different uses.
