Characteristical for the dummy hazel, is the relative to the regular hazelnut. This confuses different species mainly from October to November,
while squirrels and mouses are saving nuts for their winter storages. When a mammalian tries to harvest one of the „tasty nuts“, the plants grab the invader quickly – while the other shrubs start to disassemble the animal. The plant is one of the only carnivorous plants which nurtures from bigger animals than insects. The biological explanation for this phenomenon is, that because of the size and occurrence (mainly rough landscapes) the plant needs more nutrients than other plants of these species.
