Cono – the handmade hanging vase
BA Product Design Project
2022
semester
“Cono” is the result of our first design sprint. It is a hanging vase created through the use of ceramic and wicker. The peculiarities of this vase are the craftsmanship used in the construction, which give each piece originality and uniqueness.
The structure that keeps it elevated is made out of wickerwork, a traditional craftsman technique in Val Venosta.
“Cono” interacts with the surrounding environment of outdoors terraces or gardens, as it is designed to fit external locations of houses and apartments. The dimentions allow to plant middle-sized plants. Hanging and swinging according to the wind and the position, the vase allows different kinds of plants to be planted, spacing from climbing to drooping species. The hole at the end of the cone allows excess water to drip, so as not to suffocate the plants. The peculiar shape of the object gives “Cono“ an interesting appearance and the texture of the ceramic shows the handmade abilities of the artisans that created it by hand. Ceramic is a material that allows to plant the plants directly in the pot without the need for plastic saucers. Each step leading to the creation of “Cono” allows the craftsman to interact with each of its parts, as the use of external machinery is not necessary: thanks to the plaster mold, the structure of the vase is created by hand and then painted and decorated as desired.
