Keplero – The Nutsmasher
BA Product Design Project

semester
A nutcracker is a tool that often revolves around the principle of a lever in order to apply pressure on the nutshell to break it. Some other variants rely instead on a thin blade that penetrates the shell in the tiny side joint and splits the two halves elegantly.
Keplero is a sturdy tool in mahogany wood that chooses to allow the use of brute force to smash the nutshells into tiny pieces. Elegance is only in the shape, instinct is what is asked to the user to perform the action. The lower bowl shows a group of concentric rings that resembles orbits – for which the name “Keplero” has been chosen – that help keeping the nuts in place when they get brutally pressed. The size allows for more nuts at the same to be smashed. The press on top has a slightly prominent inner dome that contributes in keeping the object in lock when not used and affords a safer position for the fingers during the fall towards the dried fruit.
