Lay – The box that lays on the table
BA Product Design Project
2022
semester
LAY is a box that lays one the table.
It consists of a square box divided into four compartments thanks to two interlocking thin wooden plates. The shape of the container is slightly inclined thanks to a foot that has been added to the box. This not only makes the object more dynamic but also closer to the subject who will use it. The shape is in fact like an offer to the user, who will feel more enticed to take the salt, pepper, oil, vinegar from this box. Lay was made of wood and the pieces of the box are joined with 8mm wooden joints. The wood chosen for the two prototypes is cherry and walnut as they are resistant and do not absorb humidity.
Lay can be considered as a multi-use object, since it can be used in two different places of the table. its primary function is to be a container for salt, pepper, oil and vinegar. Moving it to the corner of the table it also becomes a tablecloth, and the rubber feet that I placed under the box allow it to be more stable and attached to the table. If instead we place Lay on the table it becomes a centerpiece for everyday lunches and dinners.
The measurements chosen to build the object come from a research based on the average size containers of vinegar, oil, salt, pepper.
Its packaging is made by the customers of the Prad workshop and consists of a folding cardboard box, colored with bright colors.
The idea was therefore to create an everyday life object: simple, functional and close to the user.
