Orlando
BA Visual Communication Project
2019
semester
The idea of Orlando was inspired by the reading of Virginia Woolf’s homonymous novel. Although little is left from the original character, I must acknowledge the inspiration to this (incredible) writer.
This project started by questioning myself on the concepts of submersion and emersion in literary characters and on the reader’s capability to build an identity. We are continuously exposed to confrontation, which gives us the opportunity to add up a piece to our personality and identity, to choose who we are and who we are not, what we like and what we don’t like. I was curious to test this conception of evolving identity and I chose to do so with a brief and personal case study: Orlando – an active reader – who adventures himself through a series of new places and situations seeking his very own identity, sometimes having to live someone else’s stories to have the chance to position himself and understand who he really is. His self-discovery process will bring him to go through three special environments in which he will have to face the community, the others and Orlando himself.
