Peter – the multifunctional bread box

“Peter” is the result of our second design sprint. It is a breadbox that allows the user to store a breadknife in the back side of the box. The knife is easily accessible thanks to the angled structure that includes a gap to host knives with a blade long up to 20 cm. When opened, the lid is self standing, allowing a safe opening supported by the knife holding side. Peter is inspired by a late ‘800 bread and flour holder hosted in the Dietenheim Volkskundemuseum. The material used to create the breadbox is larch wood, the perfect material to use for the making of kitchen tools and utensils because of the suitable use for edible substances. Larch is affordable, commonly used in South-Tyrol and easily malleable. The finished product can be refined by using an oil to smoothen the surface and make it suitable for food use.
“Peter” is created through the use of cutting and smoothening machinary, but it is entirely assembled by hand: dowels and glue ensure a secure and steady structure. The dimentions (34 cm x 19 cm x 12 cm) of the box allow to store even bigger loafs of bread.
