SHE COUNTS is an installation on the topic of femicides in Italy. The project shows the number of victims of femicide over the past fifteen years through a physical bar chart made of rope and wrapped around the Panchina Rossa in Bolzano’s Piazza Municipio. The idea of dedicating an installation to this theme came from a research on the number of victims. Observing the data available on femicides in Italy over the past years, makes clear that the phenomenon is not properly covered. SHE COUNTS aims to make people aware in the most immediate and visually impactful way of the high number of victims who are registered in Italy every year. The choice of the location is complementary to the installation itself, since the “Panchina Rossa” in Bolzano’s Piazza Municipio was installed in 2008 as a symbol against violence towards women and femicides. SHE COUNTS makes more explicit the message already embodied in the bench. The infographic wrapped around the metal structure of the bench, shows the annual number of victims of femicide in Italy from 2007 to 2022. The graphic is accompanied by the inscription “VOGLIAMO CONTARCI DA VIVE” (“We want to count ourselves alive”) to address passers-by to the main theme of femicides.
