TABOOBS
BA Visual Communication Project
2023
semester
“Taboobs” takes inspiration from the movement #freethenipple, which was initially an Instagram hashtag to question society’s double standards and used as a protest against inequality. This nonsensical censorship applied to women’s nipples is just the sad echo of women’s body stigmatization and sexualization, perpetuated by our male-centered society – the nipples of men and women are the same anatomically, but only women face censorship.
In order to expose this incoherence behind an actual discrimination, a series of five panels were created with texts in the shape of women’s breasts and with handmade nipples. The slogans were collected from the #freethenipple street protests and then attached to male statues’ chests. The main concept is that a naked male breast does not cause indignation as a topless female breast does.
As a second step, some passers-by and students (all genders and ages) were involved to pose with the panels and to stand for the cause.
“Taboobs” wants to highlight the real problem: not the nipples themselves, but women’s role in society. Why does it matter who the nipples belong to?
